What is a Traumatic Head or Brain Injury?

A traumatic head injury is a very serious injury which can affect cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical function by injuring the brain (a traumatic brain injury, or TBI).  A TBI can either be a closed or open injury:  closed brain injuries (including coup and countrecoup injuries, axonal shearing injuries, and injuries caused by swelling or bleeding of the brain after a trauma) do not involve penetration of the skull, while open brain injuries involve penetration of the skull and brain tissue by a foreign object. Both open and closed brain injuries can be focal (limited to one area of the brain) or diffuse (affecting the entire brain).  Brain injuries differ in severity, ranging from minor concussions to accumulation of blood around the outer covering of the brain (subdural hematoma), skull fractures, and decreased oxygen supply to the brain.

Brain Injury Symptoms

A person with a mild traumatic brain injury may remain conscious, or she or he may lose consciousness for a few seconds or minutes.  Symptoms of traumatic brain injury include confusion, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision or tired eyes, bad taste in the mouth, changes in sleep patterns, behavioral or mood changes, fatigue or lethargy, trouble with memory, concentration, attention or thinking.

Common Causes of Head Injuries

Traumatic brain injury can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object (as often occurs in motor vehicle accidents or trucking accidents) or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue (such as when a worker is hit in the head by a falling object in an industrial or construction accident).  Other common causes of head and brain injuries include slip and fall accidents, acts of violence, and a range of other tragedies.  Often, the cause of the accident is preventable.
