Cancer Victims – Our Pittsburgh Medical Malpractice Attorneys Can Help

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is truly devastating, striking fear in the person receiving the diagnosis as well as his or her loved ones.  Doctors need to promptly diagnose and treat cancers to prevent the spread of the disease to maximize the patient's chance of survival. Doctors who fail to promptly diagnose and treat cancer may have committed medical malpractice. Tragically, the failure to perform appropriate screening tests or otherwise correctly diagnose cancer in its early stages often results in catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death.  At Raizman Frischman & Matzus, P.C., our medical malpractice attorneys provide individuals in Pittsburgh and surrounding Pennsylvania areas who have been victims of cancer malpractice with outstanding legal counsel.  Our attorneys are also familiar with the disease’s physical, emotional, and psychological impact as well as the legal ramifications of a late or missed cancer diagnosis.  Our firm is dedicated to working diligently to protect our clients’ rights and pursue any compensation to which they may be entitled.

Cancer Malpractice

Cancer Malpractice

Modern medicine provides a number of simple screening tests that allow physicians to detect many cancers early on – a key factor in the disease’s successful treatment.   In addition, routine health exams can be used to discover types of cancers such as cervical, ovarian, and skin cancer (melanoma).  Screening for cancer such as breast cancer, bowel cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer (among the more commonly misdiagnosed cancers) is part of preventive medicine and has become the standard of care.

Cancer and Diagnosis Errors

Nonetheless, some cancers are not diagnosed correctly.  Investigation into cancer malpractice cases often involves determining whether there was a missed or delayed diagnosis, both of which can cause the cancer to spread unnecessarily, significantly reduce the patient’s chance of survival, and, in some cases, increase his or her chance of premature death.  Many cancers should be diagnosed earlier than they are, since delay in diagnosis can, in some instances, permit cancers to metastasize (spread beyond a treatable point), placing the patient beyond cure.  Where physicians ignore patient concerns, family histories that put patients at risk, or the standard screening recommendations, this may constitute medical malpractice, and victims may be entitled to compensation.
