Common Causes of Paraplegia and Quadriplegia

What are Paraplegia and Quadriplegia?

Paraplegia and quadriplegia (or paraparesis and quadriparesis) are debilitating conditions, caused by spinal cord injury, which are characterized by paralysis of the legs (paraplegia), or arms, chest, and legs (quadriplegia).  People with quadriplegia or paraplegia are permanently impaired and need a lifetime of medical care and treatment, including physical and occupational therapy.   They may also experience many secondary spinal cord injury related health issues, including autonomic dysreflexia (also known as hyperreflexia, or overactivity of the physiological reflexes), bladder and bowel dysfunction, urinary tract infection, pressure sores, and ulcers.

Common Causes of Paraplegia and Quadriplegia

A spinal cord injury resulting in paraplegia or quadriplegia can happen in a range of situations, including motor vehicle, trucking, premises liability, and construction accidents.  In addition, medical malpractice – for example, a doctor who commits a surgical error or delays in diagnosing a tumor, hematoma or infection – can inflict a devastating spinal cord injury.  If you have suffered a neck injury and need an attorney in Pittsburgh, or another Pennsylvania area such as Cranberry Township or Greensburg, contact our firm.  Our attorneys will determine whether you have a case and provide the experienced legal representation you need.
